Operation Smile mobilizes a world of generous hearts to heal children’s smiles and transform lives across the globe. Our network of volunteers works worldwide to repair childhood facial deformities, including cleft lips and cleft palates.



We are actively seeking a Communications and Public Relations Specialist at our Norfolk, VA Headquarters office.



The Communications and PR Specialist is responsible for orchestrating Operation Smile’s media presence, including print, television, radio, and online. This strategic position requires a dynamic person with great energy and experience in media relations, public relations, event marketing and communications. Candidates must be very skilled in pitching stories, leveraging media relationships, writing press releases, and evaluating the news/PR landscape to better position and promote the Operation Smile brand. This is a highly creative position that will enhance the effectiveness and reach of communications and marketing efforts across the entire Operation Smile global organization. This position will work cross-functionally with the Development team to sharpen pitches to corporations and celebrities.



Essential Functions:

•Orchestrate a strategic approach to PR, including generating significant media coverage for Operation Smile across a variety of channels, including, print, television, radio and online. This effort will require storyline development and proactive outreach to media outlets. The goal is to think beyond “we are going on a mission to xxx” to the much broader story of how we are a unique organization helping children around the world.

•Establish best practices and procedures for public relations/media relations.

•Act as the primary point of contact for all media inquiries. This will require not just responding quickly and effectively to individual requests, but also thinking creatively about how best to leverage contacts to tell our greater story.

•Cultivate relationships with local and national media, and establish a core group of “key advocates.”

•Conceive and execute new promotional opportunities that combine an integrated mix of media, celebrities, events, and corporate sponsorships. Add a high level of professionalism to all campaigns and events, and a polish to our PR efforts.

•Work seamlessly with Development team to help them land new deals or further cultivate existing relationships with corporate partners, adding a creative element from a press/media perspective that increases our value to a potential partner in a meaningful and measurable way.

•Work in collaboration with international foundations, donor relations, medical volunteers, and key stakeholders to maximize their effectiveness in their communications strategies. In addition, work with the student programs team to fully leverage the new online community (OS Central) through development of self-generated promotions or through partnerships with celebrities and corporate sponsors.

•Work alongside the development team to bring greater structure and process to our Smile Ambassador program in how we recruit and benefit from our relationships with celebrities. This position should also help build out our celebrity roster so we are continually relevant and appropriate for the range of demographics we want to target.

•Work closely with Online Community and Social Media Specialist in evaluating and acting on new strategic partner opportunities as well as crafting messaging through the social media channel.

•Assist in development of celebrity/corporate case studies for Development to utilize in pitches.

•Monitor all press on a daily basis to identify additional opportunities for outreach as well as determine which stories should be highlighted on OSI website.

•Coordinate with International Marketing Specialist and other key team members in the collection and development of stories for the monthly eNewsletter and quarterly Volunteer newsletter.

•Assist marketing department in copywriting/review of marketing collateral and promotion pieces as needed.

•Maintain all elements within organization media kit.

•Assist in the concept and development of the annual report.

•Additional duties as necessary.



Qualifications:

•Bachelors Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or Media Relations

•Minimum 7 years experience in a PR or Media agency

•Positive, high energy professional

•Detail-oriented

•Excellent communications and interpersonal skills

•Excellent writing skills

•Established rolodex of media contacts

•Poised, creative, and able to articulate the Operation Smile story

•Team-oriented

•Self-starter

•Comfortable in a rapidly evolving environment.
